Local exploring

Choose an entrance before you choose a route.

When you’re getting to know Lorain and nearby Elyria, Black River Reservation is one place to explore a different side of the area. Lorain County Metro Parks identifies three principal picnic areas: Day’s Dam in Lorain, and Bur Oak and High Meadows in Elyria.

The reservation includes paved all-purpose trails along the Black River. Instead of relying on a single mileage figure, choose the section you want to visit and consult the current official park information and maps for your route.

Plan a visit

Build an outing around your time.

A shorter visit

Choose a picnic area and a modest out-and-back route. Know where you’ll turn around so the return fits the time you have.

A longer outing

Review how trail sections connect and which entrance works for your route. Check current notices, weather and daylight before setting out.

A repeatable routine

Think about the kind of outing you would repeat. A manageable walk you enjoy regularly may matter more to you than an ambitious route you rarely use.

Use a home tour to test the whole day.

A neighborhood visit is a chance to look at more than listing photos. Plan an ordinary errand, visit an outdoor place and try the return trip. You’ll learn which routes feel convenient to you without relying on someone else’s definition of nearby.

Keep your park observations alongside, rather than in place of, the property questions. Where would you store shoes, coats or a bicycle? How would you enter the home after an outing? Does the garage still work when vehicles are parked? Our garage and driveway checklist helps you look at those everyday details.

If lakefront scenery is also on your list, continue with Lakeview Park. No specific travel time or walkability from Yorktown is implied; check your intended route.
