GET TO KNOW THE PLACE BEYOND THE FRONT DOOR

Start with the kind of outing you want.

A quiet walk, time at a playground and a swim call for different plans. In University Heights, Walter Stinson Community Park—often called The Walt—and Purvis Park are useful places to begin learning about the city’s recreation spaces.

Before leaving, open the official park page for directions and current rules. Seasonal facilities and programs deserve a separate check. A park being open does not mean every amenity is operating.

01
WALTER STINSON COMMUNITY PARK

A walking loop and room to pause.

The city lists a perimeter walking track, playgrounds, nature-play areas, picnic tables, adult exercise stations and a native pollinator garden at The Walt. The park is open dawn to dusk.

Picnic tables are first come, first served, and the gazebo is not reserved. The city identifies accessible playground features and seasonal accessible restrooms; check the facilities you need before your visit.

For a first outing, leave time to walk the perimeter and look at the different spaces rather than treating the park as a single stop. Choose a place to sit, notice the paths between amenities and decide what you would return to use.

02
PURVIS PARK

Plan around the activity and access.

Purvis Park includes tennis courts, a playground, a picnic pavilion and the municipal swimming pool. The city lists the park at 2198 Wrenford Road, with the car entrance at 14260 Cedar Road, and park hours from dawn to dusk.

The official page identifies the park as available to residents only. Confirm eligibility, pool admission and the current season before planning a visit. A dawn-to-dusk park schedule is not the pool’s operating schedule.

The city does not take pavilion reservations. Its picnic rules include limits on table use and do not allow reserving the space for parties. Check the posted rules before organizing a gathering.

A SIMPLE FIRST-VISIT PLAN

Make the outing useful to your home search.

Check the practical details.

Look up entry points, eligibility and seasonal facilities. Bring what your outing needs, and check weather and any current city notices.

Try your own route.

Travel from the property you are considering at a time relevant to your routine. Check the actual route and crossings rather than relying on a straight-line map distance.

Keep specific notes.

Record the spaces you used, the time you spent there and questions to revisit. Your own observations are more useful than a broad label about a neighborhood.

Connect it with Cedarbrook Road.
